MG varsity evolves programme for timely conduct of exams

Kochi: Mahatma Gandhi University has evolved a comprehensive programme to ensure the timely conduct of examinations and publication of results in 2012.

The modernisation of its examination branch is in its full swing.
For the various undergraduate programmes under choice-based credit and semester system, the online transmission of internal and external grades/data from colleges and nine centralised valuation camps is being constantly monitored by the technical team headed by the system administrator and CETEX.

Elaborating on the initiatives to streamline and strengthen the examination wing, Rajan Varughese, Pro Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu on Friday that the examination monitoring cell and centralised valuation cells are co-ordinating the smooth functioning of various valuation camps and zonal distribution of answer scripts.

“The introduction of online teachers' portal in the examination section paved the way for the creation of a reservoir of academic and service-related details of entire teaching community in the affiliated institutions. With the constant upgradation of professional details of teachers through this portal, disadvantages of the traditional index card system of teachers are eliminated and discipline-wise and course-wise appointment of examiners are ensured to enhance the quality of evaluation,” he said.

Dr. Varughese said that the increase in the number of unapproved teachers outside the aided and government sector, consequent on the mushrooming of self-financing courses has adversely affected the quality of evaluation, especially of the new generation programmes and professional courses.

The ICT related modernisation drive, sincere support of university employees and their imaginative organizational leadership are the positive factors that are impacting the quality of delivery of services of Mahatma Gandhi University.

The centralised valuation camps are scheduled in such a way as to ensure maximum teachers' participation in examination related works and to maximize the mandatory 90 working days in a semester, he said.

The university authorities said that the introduction of zonal distribution scheme for postgraduate answer papers and home valuation special scheme for undergraduate programmes has completely eliminated loss of working days or prolonged absence of teachers from colleges for evaluation related works.

The decision of the university to conduct the practical examinations for all undergraduate programmes in the odd semesters by colleges and even semesters by university for 2011-12 admission onwards will lessen problems associated with examination management at all levels, they said.
